Heretofore, systems have been developed for testing large, heavy objects such as railroad cars to determine whether or not the objects are structurally sound or otherwise suitable for use. Typically, such systems involve the use of a lifting device, such as a crane, that is capable of lifting the object from its resting position at the end of the track and transporting the object to a test station where the lifting device is capable of lifting the object and lowering it to ground level to place it under test. An example of such a system is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 4,543,708.
However, the testing of such objects has generally involved the use of a single, small testing area. In such testing systems, the object is lifted and brought into a position where it is subjected to a single test, and then the lifting device is moved out of the way to allow the object to be moved back to the resting position and the testing device to be moved out of the way so the object can be returned to the track. Such a system requires a large area at the testing site. Therefore, there is a need for a testing system that is capable of testing objects, such as railroad cars, that weigh several thousand pounds.
